Swachh Bharat Mission Urban, launched in 2014, focused on making cities Open Defecation Free (ODF) along with improving solid waste management systems for the city.
Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 launched in 2021 focuses on garbage-free cities and having minimal waste going to sanitary landfills by promoting circularity in the waste management sector.

SWACHH BHARAT MISSION: A HISTORY
PHASE 1: 2014-2019
Aim to achieve an Open Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019. Eradication of manual scavenging, generating awareness and bringing about a behavior change regarding sanitation practices, and augmentation of capacity at the local level.
PHASE 2: 2020 – 2026
Aim to sustain the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and improve the management of solid and liquid waste, while also working to improve the lives of sanitation workers.
